How to use AI to explore the writing process

Writing-process reports can be difficult for students or teachers to interpret on their own. Charts showing pauses, revisions, and drafting patterns often raise questions without clear answers.

Process Feedback includes a feature called Copy for AI to support student reflection after the writing task is complete.

What is the “Copy for AI” option?

Copy for AI appears on each major chart and section of a writing-process report.

When clicked, it copies:

  • a short reflection-oriented prompt,
  • the data behind the chart,
  • and brief context explaining what the data represents.

You can paste this content into any AI tool (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) to help interpret the writing process.

When should students use it?

Copy for AI is designed for post-writing reflection, such as:

  • after submitting a draft,
  • during a reflection activity,
  • before planning a revision.

AI is used to interpret writing behavior—not to generate or revise text.

How students or teachers typically use Copy for AI

  1. Open a writing-process report.
  2. Choose a chart or pattern you want to understand.
  3. Click Copy for AI.
  4. Paste the content into an AI tool and review the response.
  5. Compare the AI explanation with the author’s own experience writing the paper.

Instructional notes

  • AI output should be treated as a starting point for reflection, not a judgment.
  • Students remain responsible for interpreting and questioning AI-generated explanations.
  • No data is automatically shared with AI tools.

Copy for AI helps students move from raw process data to meaningful reflection—without shifting authorship or control away from learners.
